How Often Should You Really Change Your Oil?

The old “every 3,000 miles” rule is mostly outdated. The honest answer depends on the type of oil your car uses and how you drive. Here’s how to think about it.

Conventional vs. synthetic oil

  • Conventional oil: typically every 3,000–5,000 miles.
  • Synthetic blend: around 5,000–7,000 miles.
  • Full synthetic: often 7,500–10,000 miles.

Always check your owner’s manual — the manufacturer’s schedule is the best starting point.

When to change it sooner

Lots of short trips, stop-and-go traffic, towing, or extreme heat (hello, Dallas summer) are hard on oil. If you drive that way, lean toward the shorter end of the range.

Signs it’s overdue

  • Oil looks dark and gritty on the dipstick
  • The oil-change or check-engine light is on
  • It’s been more than six months, even if you haven’t hit the mileage
