Short answer: no. A dealership cannot void your factory warranty simply because an independent shop did your maintenance or repairs. Federal law — the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act — protects your right to choose where you get your car serviced, as long as the work is done correctly with quality parts and you keep your records.
The law in plain English
Carmakers can’t require you to use the dealer for routine maintenance to keep your warranty valid, and they can’t void coverage just because you didn’t. If a dealer ever claims otherwise, they have to prove that outside work actually caused the failure they’re refusing to cover.
What you DO need to do
- Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual (intervals and services).
- Keep your receipts showing the work, date, mileage, and parts used.
- Use quality parts that meet the manufacturer’s specs.

When you SHOULD go to the dealer
